Daniel Buckley is a Tucson based film producer/director and co-founder with Ralph Gonzalez and Julie Gallego of the Cine Plaza at the Fox documentary film series.
Buckley spent 30 plus years as a classical, folk and world music writer and multimedia producer, working for such publications as The Tucson Weekly, Stereophile Magazine, Native Peoples, and the Tucson Citizen daily newspaper.
In addition to five documentary films on Southwestern Native American and Mexican American culture for the Cine Plaza series (including “Tucson’s Heart and Soul: El Casino Ballroom,” featured in the Arizona International Film Festival) he has produced and directed four films for the Arizona Historical Society, including “100 Years/100 Quilts” for the Arizona Centennial exhibit and “Yuma: Gateway to the Southwest.” Buckley was the official video producer for the Arizona Centennial’s web page (www.arizonaexperience.org), contributing roughly 100 short films for the site. In 1990 Buckley was chosen by Gannett Newspapers to barnstorm the country for a syndicated series of articles on Music in America.
Buckley documented the stories of the survivors of the January 8th 2011 assassination attempt on the life of Congresswoman Gabby Giffords for the January 8th Foundation, in addition to filming interviews for the Stories of Resilience exhibition of the Arizona Historical Society. He also collaborated with the Arizona State Museum to create videos in multiple languages to instruct citizens in war torn areas in preparing archaeological discoveries for scholarly analysis.
He is a leading writer on Native American and Mexican traditional music, and in 2013 was inducted into the Mariachi Hall of Fame by the Tucson International Mariachi Conference. In 2014 he was named Artist of the Year at the Arizona Governor’s Arts Awards and has received grants and awards from the Arizona Commission on the Arts, the Tucson Pima Arts Council, The David and Luria Lovell Foundation, The Southwestern Foundation, the Southwest Interdisciplinary Arts Fund, the Associated Press and Gannett Newspapers for his work as an artist and journalist.
In addition he is an acclaimed landscape photographer, composer and performance artist, and is a lunar geologist by training.
Presently Buckley is producing a film and book on the transformational power of youth mariachis and folklorico dance groups. Both are titled The Mariachi Miracle and will be released in 2022.
