Happy 70th birthday to singer Linda Ronstadt – beloved pop star and seminal figure in the youth mariachi movement.
Her 1980s recordings Canciones de Mi Padre and Mas Canciones sparked not just a resurgence of interest in mariachi and ranchera music but catalyzed the start of curriculum-based mariachi programs in Tucson’s public schools, and beyond. Her impact is huge in the youth mariachi and folklórico world.
A member of the Mariachi Miracle advisory board, Ronstadt sat down and shared some of her memories of her start in the mariachi world, found in the video attached.
The first hand memories of seminal figures in the youth mariachi and folklórico movement, as well as current students, graduates of these programs, friends, family members, teachers, administrators and more, are the fabric of story telling that makes The Mariachi Miracle film and book project what it is.
We still have much more to film and many interviews to do before we stop filming this fall and begin the arduous editing, writing and post production process for a finished product in sporing, 2017. And summer is a critical time because the work never stops but funds are critically short.
We urgently need your financial help to reach our end-of-July GoFundMe goal of $6000. We’re already almost halfway there but your donation will help take us to that number and help us meet expenses as we roll towards the upcoming 2016/2017 school year. If you’d rather choose another way to support the project, including tax-deductible donation possibilities, click here.
Listen to Linda Ronstadt tell her story and help us to gather the many stories that need to be captured to create a first hand account of this remarkable American success story.
I am so grateful to those who have already contributed, and look forward to adding more members to the army of support that propels The Mariachi Miracle. For more go to www.mariachimiracle.com.
